One of the biggest Cops for Cancer events in the region takes place today.
Close to 30 people will be shaving their heads at the Owen Sound event.
It starts with a parade from the Bayshore Broadcasting parking lot at 1:30 PM as participants make their way to City Hall for the shave off at 2:30 PM.
Our own Fred Wallace will be MC’ing the event.
Owen Sound Community Services Officer Chris Hartley is shaving his head with his 7 year old son Easton.
Hartley says it was Easton who came up with the idea to shave his head and he decided to shave his own head in support of his son’s plans.
Another Cops for Cancer event is happening today in Markdale with a BBQ and shave off scheduled for 5 PM to 7 PM.
The event is taking place in the parking lot of Sidekicks Cafe.
In the past four years this event has collected 24 thousand dollars to help fight cancer.
A dozen participants will take part in the Markdale event.
There’s also a Cops for Cancer shave off at 6 PM in Hanover tonight at Heritage Square Park.
Fundraising Co-ordinator Jen Wright says all of the money raised in Grey Bruce will go to paediatric cancer.
She notes one of the biggest costs they cover is transportation for parents to spend with their children while receiving treatment in hospitals in Toronto or London.
Wright says she is thrilled with the support from different communities and schools in Bruce and Grey Counties.
The goal for this year’s 13th annual Cops for Cancer campaign is 300 thousand dollars. (they raised $239,376 in 2008)
The Bluewater Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society has raised 2.37 million dollars in the first 12 years of the campaign.
Wright notes people are not only shaving their head but they are also donating ponytails and they are also selling blue extensions as a way to raise money.
There are also events in Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Blue Mountains, and Lucknow tomorrow
