The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is looking at long term storage options for used fuel from nuclear facilities.
An open house was held in Walkerton recently.
Vice President of Environmental Assessment Angelo Castellan stresses there are no candidate sites right now.
He saays they are still looking for expressions of interest from possible host communities.
Castellan says if the project can be successfully launched, they could develop a list of candidate sites next year.
But they want to hear what Canadians have to say about the issue first.
The Walkerton meeting was one of a series being held across Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan.
A long-term storage site for used nuclear fuel shouldn’t be confused with the Deep Geological Repository that is being proposed for the Bruce Power site.
That facility will only be used to store low and intermediate level radioacative waste from Ontario’s nuclear power stations.
