Fifty three Bruce County families are now or about to be home owners thanks to the Canada Ontario Affordable Housing Program.
Bruce County Manager of Housing Services Susan Earle says the program officially ended in March.
Earle is pleased they were able to allocate 360 thousand dollars in down payment cash – leaving only forty thousand untapped dollars in the program set aside for the county.
Earle says money was distributed throughout the county, though more applicants came from the Bruce Peninsula and Brockton areas.
Earle says the 53 families will be invited to a “post application” event at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in June.
There, they will get tips from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation on maintenance and energy conservation.
Earle expects the program to pop up again in the future.
The program pays the five per cent down payment needed for families with income totalling 65 thousand dollars and under for a home listed as much as two hundred thousand dollars.
The loan is interest free and is only paid back when the house is sold – if the owner has lived in it for less than twenty years.
