A May long weekend tradition continues at Varney Pond.
The Durham Activity Centre is hosting their 8th annual Youth Fishing Derby.
Event organizer Dan Sullivan says they always have a good turnout, but it’s actually even higher when the weather is a bit bad.
Kids 13 and under are invited to cast their line for up to three fish in the pond that’s been stocked with over 550 rainbow trout.
A limited number of poles will be available to borrow.
Registration is 8 dollars per child, and includes a goody bag and the chance to win prizes.
Kids 13 and over and parents who are with the young anglers can participate for 15 dollars but will be limited to two fish.
In a first for the event this year, a derby was held at the pond on Friday for special needs individuals.
While it was invite only this time, Sullivan says it’s something they hope to expand upon in the future.
The Youth Fishing Derby is on Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM and again Sunday from 8 AM to 1 PM.
