The “Gateway to the Bruce” sign that arched over the highway as a welcome to travellers recently fell onto the road.
South Bruce Operations Manager Sharon Chambers says the municipality received a telephone call a couple of weeks ago about the collapse and fortunately nobody was hurt.
Chambers says a bracket that held the sign onto a pole failed.
She the sign will not be put up again until there is full assurance that it will not be a risk to public safety.
Chambers says the sign is very heavy and in order to ensure safety, they want engineering work done on it before it is deemed safe to be over the busy highway.
A Gateway to the Bruce sign has been a landmark over Highway 9 at the east end of Mildmay for many years.
The sign that recently collapsed is not the original–it was installed in 2006.
