Queens Park is pumping over 5.5 million dollars into area schools, making them more energy efficient.
The province is hoping to create over 5 thousand jobs in the geen economy as it invests in school boards across the Ontario.
Construction will take place over the summer, and school boards will begin saving money on energy this fall.
4.4 million dollars will go to the Bluewater district school board, while the Bruce Grey catholic board is getting just over a million dollars in funding.
Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell says the investment is part of
the provincial governments’ continued commitment towards providing a
cleaner and greener Ontario for future generations.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch says the funding should help to
upgrade schools and being more energy efficient means savings that can be used on textbooks and supplies.
Of the 550-million dollar province-wide investment, 400 million dollars will be allocated to:
Conducting energy audits to help manage and conserve energy and retrofitting buildings with new energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and boilers.
This year, school boards will spend about 460 million dollars on utility bills.
This investment will help lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce annual energy consumption by about 100 million megajoules per year, enough to power over 25 hundred houses.
