A massive outpouring of community respect for the founder of Meaford’s 100 mile market.
More than 150 people packed the Meaford Hall Sunday for a special ceremony remember David Harper, who recently lost a brief fight with pancreatic cancer at the age of 55.
His sudden death took the community by surprize and many people attending yesterdays memorial service were still in a state of shock.
Several speakers paid tribute to Harber and his wife Barbara Kay who together pushed the whole meaning of the local food movement to a higher level.
In addition to running a sucessfull elk farm just south of Meaford, the couple also were instrumental in setting up the Grey Bruce Agricultural and Culinary Association, whose mandate is to market local produced food.
Harper and his wife are best known as the driving forces behind Meafords 100 Mile Market.
The 100 Mile Market became a key supplier to many local restaurants and led a similar market in Owen Sound called The Around the Sound food market
