Kincardine is about to become the latest municipality to withdraw from the Paisley Fire Board.
Saugeen Shores withdrew from the board last year, leaving Kincardine with over 27 percent of the ownership in the fire department, the rest belonging to Arran-Elderslie and Brockton.
The Paisley Fire Department currently serves the eastern part of the former Bruce Township.
Kincardine Fire Chief Jamie MacKinnon says when the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office conducted a survey for Arran-Elderslie in 2007, it recommended changes to how the department operates.
He says Kincardine’s advisor in the office has since told them they should discontinue their involvement.
The report suggested there are liability issues from a lack of volunteer firefighters to adequately respond to calls.
MacKinnon says Saugeen Shores’ decision to pull out of the board started the process for Kincardine, and the advice from the Fire Marshal’s office only helped finalize the plan.
MacKinnon says they’ll develop a new method of fire protection for the area of Kincardine served by Paisley.
He says that could include contracting fire protection to Paisley with the same level of service provided currently, but Kincardine firefighters would also respond to calls in that area and then a decision would be made about which department remains on the scene.
