South Bruce Council is hopeful that its conservation authority motion is successful.
It calls on the provincial government to significantly increase funding for conservation authorities to help reduce the conservation levy burden.
Mayor Bill Goetz says the motion has received support from municipal councils and leaders across Ontario.
Goetz won’t guess how many responses they’ve receive so far, but the municipality plans to announce the amount once the last ones arrive.
Goetz says municipal leaders agree it is unfair for rural municipalities to carry the brunt of the costs for conservation funding.
He says municipalities in the Saugeen Conservation Authority pay 20 times more per capita for conservation than residents of Toronto do.
Goetz says people from Toronto are welcome to come out and enjoy what rural Ontario has to offer — but he wishes they would pay their fair share.
