Shoes can tell a story.
That will be proven today at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton.
The museum is presenting a unique “Shoe & Tell” exhibit entitled “Step Into Spring” as part of the third annual Hats Off to Spring afternoon tea.
Founder of the Mobile Millinery Museum and Costume Archive Norma Shephard says she’s bringing in a large portion of her selection of shoes, collected over the years.
Shephard says her prime collection was hats but she wanted the apparell to be put into context and shoes did the trick.
She says she will be featuring shoes from the 19th and 20th century that will tell the story of the times, just like history books do.
Shephard says she’s particularly fascinated with the shoe designs during the war years.
She says designers had to contend with government restrictions on leather and fabric use.
She says it’s exciting to see how the designers created the fashions of the day despite the restrictions.
The “Shoe and Tell” and “Hats off to Spring” tea starts at 1:30 PM tomorrow at the Bruce County Museum.
