The Town of South Bruce Peninsula does not want to change their garbage pick-up.
Council will not be implementing a bag tag system.
After two years of investigating user pay bag tags, council has turned down the garbage collection system.
The motion came after a recommendation at last night’s meeting from the Waste Committee to carry the first and second readings of the bag tag by law.
Waste Committee member Bob Woolvett says after the first and second readings, council would have been able to make alterations – including what the cost would be, after receiving public input.
Woolvett says the committee did the best they could in trying to convince council to accept their by law and make the landfill last well into the future.
He adds he does respect council’s decision because they are speaking on behalf of the constituents.
Councillor and Waste Committee Member Dan Kerr he is very disappointed in council’s decision to turn down the by law but they are looking at other solutions.
Kerr says they will be stressing the importance of composting and may consider reducing the bag pick up from 2 to 1.
Woolvett says the committee was struck because council had concerns about the life expectancy of their landfill, which has about 8-12 years left.
He says their number one goal was to decrease the amount of recycling and compost going into the landfill.
Woolvett says the current recycling diversion rate is 21 per cent and they should be around 50 to 80 per cent.
