A two time Nobel Peace Prize Nominee will be speaking before a packed house tonight in Collingwood.
Craig Kielburger — who founded Free the Children — says there are lots of local schools in our area that have made a huge impact around the world.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the Admiral in Collingwood raised money to build a brand new school China and Sierra Leone.
St. Mary’s also raised money for water and sewer projects around the world, including Sierra Leone.
CCI had a unique challenge to raise awareness about children without a voice.
Kielburger says the school didn’t talk, text, or e-mail for 24 hours to raise awareness of children in the world who don’t have a voice.
Kielburger says his main goal is to create a generation of engaged citizens through raising awareness in young people today.
He says it’s important for students to be aware of global issues, to consume news, and recognize the ecological impact their actions have on the world, because this generation has to be more aware and informed then ever before.
ielburger says he had the honour of attending a conference for 7 days with the Dalai Lama and other incredible people.
Guests at the conference were asked what the biggest challenge facing our time was, and he says the Dalai Lama summed up the conversation by saying it isn’t weapons of mass destruction or terrorism.
Instead, the biggest challenge is that we are raising a generation of passive bystanders.
Kielburger says it’s so easy to change the channel or turn the page and ignore what’s going on in the world.
He says we need a generation today that will open their eyes, and open their hearts.
Kielburger will be at the Gayety Theatre at 7 PM.
Tickets are 5 dollars for a volunteer, and 10 dollars for the general public.
