Clearview Councillor John Crispo has died in a Toronto hospital following a long battle with cancer.
Fellow councillor Thom Patterson announced Crispo’s resignation from his council seat at last night’s Council meeting in Stayner.
Crispo died overnight.
He was an economist and Professor of Political Economy in the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
The author of several books on economics, he was also an advisor to the Brian Mulroney government during the free trade debate of the 1980’s.
His most recent book was an autobiography entitled Rebel without a Pause: Memoirs of a Canadian Maverick.
Crispo retired to Creemore in the mid 1990’s and was elected as Councillor for Ward 3, in the latest municipal elections.
Crispo entered local politics as a vocal opponent of a huge development planned for Creemore and led a citizen’s group that battled it to the Ontario Municipal Board.
A modified proposal was given the go-ahead by the OMB last year.
