The Outgoing Executive Director of the Grey County Kiwanis Music Festival wants school boards to reconsider the role of music.
Bert Hood stepped down as Executive Director of the Festival after the last performance last week.
Hood has been involved with the Festival for the last 46 years and he says they had another great year with more than 600 entries.
The former music teacher says he is amazed at the amount of local talent in Grey Bruce.
But Hood feels music can play a larger role in schools in the region.
Hood remembers the time when each school in Grey Bruce had its own music teacher.
But he feels amalgamation played a large role in music’s diminished role in the curriculum.
Hood says music is the one subject that teaches students to read and write as well as history, geography and co-operation.
Hood says he also did a study of School Councils at high schools in Grey Bruce and found 80 per cent of the members were taking music.
Hood says it’s about time the school boards addressed the role of music.
Mary Jane Quinn will replace Bert Hood as the Executive Director of the Grey County Kiwanis Music Festival.
