An outbreak of antibiotic-resistant bacteria at the Gret Bruce Regional Health Centre in Owen Sound is now over.
Interim President Maureen Solecki says the all-clear has been given for Unit 4-1.
Six patients were carrying the VRE bacteria a week ago, although no patients were actually ill.
As a precaution, Grey Bruce Health Services put strict limits on visitors to the affect Unit and monitored for any outbreak.
Solecki says on the recommendation of the University Health Network, they increased the level of cleaning in patient rooms and actually cleaned rooms twice after a patient was discharged.
VRE bacteria live in the human bowels and are resistant to Vancomycin, a strong antibiotic used to tread infection.
The bacteria can live for a long time on surfaces like bed rails, telephones, and doorknobs, and that’s why keeping hands clean is extremely important.
Solecki says the Owen Sound hospital should be back to normal for the start of next week.
