A community garden is in the works for Southampton.
Spokesperson Carol Vaughn says they’re holding a public meeting tonight at 7:30 PM at the Southampton Town Hall.
Vaughn says the meeting is an informational gathering to see if there is interest and to answer any questions.
She says they are proposing an organic community vegetable garden that would be located behind the Rotary Scout Hall and Chantry Centre, adjacent to Jubilee Park.
Vaughn says there are different types of community gardens and that’s one of the reasons for tonight’s meeting.
The available space at the proposed site would provide enough area to grow enough food to feed 35 families of four.
Vaughn says each gardener would have to pay a membership fee to help defray costs and they’re hoping to get some concessions from the town as well.
Nearby Southampton Rotary has already indicated they would allow their taps to be used for a watering source.
Vaughn says besides the organic vegetable garden they plan on planting beneficial plants that attract birds, bees and butterflies, needed to pollinate the garden.
She says she hopes to have the first shovel in the ground by the holiday weekend in May.
