The Township of Georgian Bluffs are taking all the necessary precautions to extend the life of its landfill.
Georgian Bluffs council is putting a ten thousand dollar deposit on an Eco-Shredder from England.
The new equipment will be used to shred wood materials, garbage and basically anything except for metal going into the landfill.
Mayor Alan Barfoot says the shredder will reduce waste by five times every year.
Barfoot says this initiative is part of a waste management master plan being completed for the Ministry of Environment.
Georgian Bluffs has been working with the MOE to get approval to recontour the site, which will extend the landfill’s life by about three years.
Currently without the shredder or the recontouring, it only has about a year left.
In addition to the master plan council still has some well monitoring in the landfill to complete before the green light is given for the recontouring.
Barfoot says they have seen a demo of the shredder and are very pleased with the results.
He says they are anxious for it to start working in their landfill.
Barfoot says the shredder they will receive is a refurbished one – but adds it will suite the township’s needs just fine.
The total cost of the Eco-Shredder is 165 thousand dollars.
