Residents in Lucknow are having a tough time adapting to a new Clear Bag Policy.
As of March 1st, residents were required to put their trash in clear bags at the curb.
Huron Kinloss Public Works Manager Hugh Nichol says it’s the policy of the Mid-Huron Landfill site, where Lucknow garbage is taken.
He says if garbage is NOT in a clear bag, at the curb, it will not be picked up.
While they try to remind people to use clear bags, there are other issues surrounding the system they are having problems with.
Nichol says some people are still putting recyclable items in the clear bags and even those bags are rejected by the land fill.
In fact, on the first pick up date of the new system – many bags were left at the curb with red circles drawn on them to indicated offensive items.
Nichol says another issue is privacy, as there are some things being thrown away – residents would rather their neighbours not see.
To solve that issue – privacy bags that go inside the clear bag need to be used as well.
Nichol says getting used to the system will take time, and plenty of education.
He admits though, there are items residents in Lucknow just don’t know what to do with — because the items are not accepted by the blue box program and at the same time — are not accepted as trash at the landfill.
His main concern, is that if the issue is not controlled, tipping fees could be doubled or, service will be rejected all together by the Mid-Huron Landfill.
Residents have known about the new system for many months.
