You might see more than the usual number of young people on the downtown streets of Port Elgin and Hanover.
Today members of the Air Cadets in both municipalities are joining with cadets in Wingham on a walk-a-thon, supporting the families of our troops overseas.
Commanding Officer of the 340 air cadets in Port Elgin, Captain Pat McNinch says money raised will go towards creating packages at Christmas time under Operation Santa Claus.
McNinch says it costs about 200 dollars to put together one such package and get it transported to wherever our troops are around the world.
He says it’s a bit of support from home showing the troops we’re thinking of them.
The Wingham cadets have been doing this for the past two or three years and for the first time, cadets from Port Elgin and Hanover are taking part.
In Port Elgin, the walkathon will start at the Coulter Parkette and then wind its way through the downtown streets by the 20 or so cadets.
A similar event will take place in Hanover as well.
Both go from 9 AM to 2 PM.
McNinch says because this is a first for Port Elgin, no monetary goal has been set.
He says they’re more interested in making everyone aware of the program itself and how the cadets are helping out.
