The President of Steelback Breweries in Tiverton is stunned.
Ian MacDonald says a decision to serve canned beer at the 2009 Tiverton Old Boys and Girls Reunion — shuts his company out of the running — despite carrying the town’s name on his beer’s label.
The company only sells beer in bottles and by the keg.
MacDonald says opting not to use the hometown brewery, that promotes the town outright, on all of its packaging is a “slap in the face.”
He can’t believe a municipally run and funded reunion wouldn’t choose a company in it’s own area pays taxes, employees local people and supports local businesses and various events.
MacDonald also disputes reasons to choose cans over bottles or kegs; arguing cans are not proven to be safer, or more environmentally friendly.
He also says draft can provide higher financial returns and be served in biodegradable plastic cups.
Steelback is still technically in the running, but of course, the brewery does not offer canned beer.
MacDonald tells Bayshore Broadcasting News, a decision to not support his brewery, forces him to not support the town in the future.
In the past, Steelback has sponsored such events as the Tiverton fall fair and numerous dances.
The reunion runs July 31st to August 3rd.
A decision as to which beer brand to go with for the event is expected within a few weeks from Kincardine Council.
