The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks have taken the first game of the WOAA Senior AA Men’s Championship series.
The Hawks scored a 4-3 win over the Tavistock Royals at the Southampton Coliseum last night.
Forward Bill Monkman led the way with a pair of goals including the game winner with less than two minutes left to play in regulation time.
Singles came from Ryan Dudgeon and Brian Kazarian.
Coach Don Matheson says the Tavistock squad is a lot like Shelburne so the local team didn’t have to adjust its game very much.
He says they’re looking forward to playing in Tavistock where the it’s apparently a big ice pad, like Port Elgin so it will fit right into their system.
Both teams played a tight defensive game with most goals coming at even strength.
The next game in the best of seven series goes tonight in Tavistock.
Game time there is 8:30.
The next home game is next Friday, Apr. 17th at the Southampton Coliseum at 8:30.
