The jury is still out when it comes to the plan to harmonize the provincial sales tax and the GST.
General Manager of the Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce Joanne Robbins said she understands the Ontario Chamber has been lobbying for this marriage between the two taxes for the past four years.
The OCC believes it will be good for the business people and Robbins tends to agree.
However she says she’s not so sure this harmonization will be good for the consumer.
Robbins says she has the proposed legislation but has yet to read through all of it and will withold further comment until that time.
However she welcomes comments from Chamber members and from the public at large.
The harmonization of taxes is expected to make life easier for the business world but put added taxes on items that are now exempt which would hurt the consumer.
The legislation is not expected to take effect until July 2010.
