There is a move by the Bruce Grey Huron Disability Transportation Corporation to get some of the provincial Gas Tax money.
The Town of Hanover has passed a motion of support to have the Ontario Liberal government amend the Gas Tax funding formula to allow for money to be used for the operation of the service.
Councillor and Corporation Chair Selwyn Hicks says he has been hearing from other communities in Ontario with disability transportation that they are in a similar dilemma.
He hopes this will send a message to the Liberal government that changing the funding formula is a good solution adding this will not cost the Province additional money.
He says if they can get access to the funds for operational purposes then they will be OK.
Hicks says the motion will be delivered to Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell so it can be forwarded to the Minister of Transportation Jim Bradley.
He says Mitchell has been supportive of the initiative since South Bruce has pulled out of the Corporation and the Municipality falls in her riding.
He says Hanover and West Grey — which are in the riding of Bruce Grey Owen Sound and MPP Bill Murdoch — have both been able to put in their share of the funding.
He says 4 of the 5 member municipalities have reaffirmed their commitment to the Corporation in contributing their share of the operational expenses.
Hicks says the Corporation is also looking to the Southwest Local Health Integration Network in generating more revenue.
He says the LHIN is looking at reducing their cost for non-emergency transportation.
He says the public would be well served by being in negotiations with the LHIN in providing non-emergency transportation.
He says it would cost the hospital 700 dollars per trip for an ambulance while their service is considerably less.
