A group of residents in Blair’s Grove wants Huron-Kinloss to help them with a flood problem.
Around 40 people came to the April 6th Council meeting to discuss how the Township can remediate the situation.
Director of Public Works Hugh Nichol says the flooding is caused by a 6-inch drainage system built a number of years ago that can’t handle the amount of water for today’s needs.
He says there is a section of 600 feet where they can make upgrades to the drain and feels that can help alleviate the problem.
He says the area has that one single drain so they are limited to where they can take the water to.
Murray Jamieson was one resident who came to the meeting.
He says the drain is so small that every year a high pressure hose is put in to clean out the drain.
Jamieson says there are a number of homes including his that operate a sump pump around the clock to make sure water doesn’t enter into their basement.
He says a power outage on Monday prevent some homes to pump out the water.
He says some residents were bailing out water from their basements by hand during the power outage.
Nichol says it is an extremely long process to install a new drain.
He says they have to get a certificate of approval from the Ministry of the Environment.
He says the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, First Nation communities, and conservation authorities would all have to have input in the process as well.
