The future of the nuclear industry and its suppliers could be quite rosy, depending on a decision from the Ontario government.
The President of the Organization of CANDU Industries Doctor Neil Alexander says he hopes the province decides to approve the building of a CANDU reactor in Canada rather than purchasing from abroad.
Alexander says his organization has more than 120 member companies in the nuclear industry and he wants to stress the importance of the nuclear industry to Ontario.
He says it can be a powerful job-creating engine for the province which is seeing its manufacturing industry diminish.
Alexander says he sees the possibility of up to 450 nuclear reactors being built in the near future around the world creating trillions of dollars of opportunity.
He says Canada is a leader in the technology and it must be maintained.
While Ontario weathers hard economic times with people losing their jobs and companies closing their doors, some manufacturers are in fact expanding and looking to hire people.
Alexander says these companies are in the fast-growing nuclear industry and all Canada has to do is maintain its 10 per cent slice of the global market and work to make it grow.
He says he would like to see Ontario decide to build an advanced CANDU reactor which he believes can be done here.
He says that will set up the future for members of his organization in being suppliers to the future builds.
