You might be able to roast marshmallows in your backyard in Collingwood this summer.
The proposed by-law means all private land owners can have a fire in a confined fireplace like a chimenea.
But don’t expect to have a bonfire on the beach, Fire Chief Trent Elyea says that will not be allowed.
Elyea says they needed a new by-law because the one they came up with last year caused quite a stir because it was passed very quickly without much public input.
He adds it only allowed people on the shore to burn debris which they can still do under this by-law.
He says bonfires will be allowed, but only a small one in most cases which the fire department will assess before granting the permit.
Chief Elyea says the public will be notified right away and will have a chance to comment and he doesn’t expect there to be any objections.
He says he’s hoping it will be before council next Monday for adoption.
Elyea tells us the 102 current permits will be renewed. A permit costs 25 dollars.
But he says if you don’t get a permit before you have any kind of fire, you could be fined up to 25 thousand dollars.
