For the first time ever, Saugeen Shores will be hosting its own Relay for Life fundraiser for cancer research.
Organizer Rona Cobean says the event will run Friday, June 26th — from 7 PM to 7 AM — at the Saugeen District Secondary School track.
Cobean says she, along with fellow organizers Nancy MacLeod and Trish Bernard thought last summer it was time for this type of event in Saugeen Shores and the Bluewater Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society agreed.
Cobean says the event will raise money for cancer research and for cancer services such as the program that transports people to appointments to treat cancer.
But she says the real objective is all about survivors and the call is out to anyone who is a survivor of cancer to contact the Bluewater Unit and be part of the Saugeen Shores event.
Cobean says she doesn’t care if the person has been a survivor for a day, a month or a year or more, they want as many survivors out for the beginning “Survivor Lap” that kicks of the relay.
Rona Cobean lost her teenaged daughter Caitlin to cancer last summer.
Meanwhile, Nancy MacLeod says the reaction to the local event has been terrific.
She says so far they have 28 teams of 10-people each have registered and almost six thousand dollars has been raised so far.
MacLeod says they’re looking for more teams.
They can sign up on line at the Canadian Cancer Society website or pick up forms at businesses throughout Saugeen Shores.
The Relay for Life will have all the amenities of others run in the region with one twist.
Should there be inclement weather, the Bluewater District School Board has given permission for the event to move indoors at SDSS.
98 the Beach and Bayshore Broadcasting are proud sponsors of the Saugeen Shores Relay for Life.
