Hanover’s garbage collector is taking its trash out of town.
Councillor Peter Hambly says their contractor — Waste Management — will be hauling the garbage to their own landfill site located just south of London.
That is good news — and bad news.
Hambly says this will mean less garbage will going to the Hanover/Walkerton landfill site.
But Hambly says it also means the loss of around 250 thousand dollars in annual revenue had the garbage went to the Towns landfill.
This resulted in a shortfall of 57 hundred dollars in the 2009 landfill budget.
Hambly — who sits on the Hanover Walkerton Waste Management Committee — says they will consider changing their fees to keep the landfill in operation.
He says some landfill costs are fixed while others are more flexible.
Hambly says the contractor has every right to take the garbage where it can be legally dropped off.
He says if Toronto can take their garbage to Michigan, Waste Management can haul the garbage to wherever they are allowed to take it to.
Hambly says the committee is also looking to move to clear plastic bags for garbage collection.
He says the clear bags would allow workers to see what items in the garbage bag should not be going to the landfill like paint cans and batteries.
He says the cost of the clear bags is virtually identical to regular garbage bags.
Hambly says Council will go over the recommendation and staff will be informed later in the spring.
