Brockton is seeing a rise in construction.
According to Chief Building Official Terry Tuck, 24 permits were issued in 2008 for single family dwellings with a construction value of 5.3 million dollars, 4 commercial permits with a value of 8.5 million dollars, and 45 permits for agriculture at 3.3 million dollars.
He says there were other permits issued for semi-detached homes, swimming pools, signs, and renovation projects.
He say the overall total of construction values in 2008 is 19.3 million dollars.
Tuck says in 2007 they were at 12 million dollars and usually they are around that mark for construction values.
While there have been a number of developers who want to build new residential units in the Walkerton area, Tuck says the problem is that there is no room in the Municipality to build them.
He says many of the vacant lots are not designated for residential use.
Tuck says there are a number of draft plan of subdivisions that have been in the books for a number of years.
He says there are some who have been holding on to these draft plans for 18 or 19 years and don’t intend on building on those lots.
He says there are developers who want to expand but can’t because of these inactive draft plans and they have to be removed in order to move ahead.
