Simcoe County’s Warden says he’s not interested in a debate with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May over the approvals and process behind the Site 41 landfill.
This week, the Greens sent a letter to Tony Guergis, inviting a debate over comments he made to Bayshore Broadcasting News during an interview this winter.
The party says his assertion that the site in Tiny Township had been approved all the way along are not correct.
Guergis says he will turn down the invitation, but suggest the party work at the federal level to help reduce the garbage Simcoe County needs to put in landfills.
He says the federal government allows packaging and products into the country that can’t be recycled, which increases the need for landfills.
Guergis further says the time for debate over Site 41 is over, since construction is well underway.
The landfill will begin accepting trash from Midland, Penetanguishene, and Tiny and Tay townships sometime over the summer.
