The 7th annual Crone Cup Hockey Game is set for today at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Center.
The game, which pits the OSCVI Lady Falcons against their cross city rivals, the West Hill Raiders, started in 2003 as a fundraiser to assist Jason Crone who had been badly injured in a minor hockey game.
Through the years, the Crone Cup has grown in every way and a big crowd is expected to be on hand again to watch the contest and generate funds.
Last year, the Crone Cup generated $ 11.000 for ” Shoot for Cure ” which is devoted to Spinal Cord research.
This year, the proceeds will be split between ” Shoot for Cure ” & supporting Ian Hyland & his family.
Ian Hyland, a grade 8 student at Hillcrest Elementary School in Owen Sound was paralysed this winter in a snowboarding accident and as a result, he and his family are facing a number of expenses.
In a rarity this year, Jason Crone will not be attending the game.
Since Crone’s injury in 2003, he has risen to become a key member of Canada’s Wheelchair Rugby team and is committed to attending a World Championship training session in Vancouver on the date of the Crone Cup.
However, Jason Crone has been quite active promoting the 2009 Crone Cup making visits to OSCVI and conducting an assembly presentation at Hillcrest Elementary.
The Crone Cup begins Friday at 1 PM with an hour of skills competition involving players at various levels.
The Crone Cup game between the OSCVI Lady Falcons and West Hill is set to start at 2 PM.
