Taxpayers in Arran Elderslie are looking at property tax increase of 5 to 6 per cent right now, but budgeting is not over yet.
Mayor Ron Oswald says council has taken a few runs at the budget, and it will be on the table again at the next council meeting April 14th.
As it stands, Oswald says the increase is probably too great in these tough economic times.
He is hoping they can trim the increase back to around the 4 per cent level, which would be the same as the hike in taxes in 2008.
Arran Elderslie has a budget of roughly 8 million dollars and trimming the numbers by one per cent would mean a cut of 27 thousand dollars in the budget.
Mayor Oswald says one variable that remains up in the air is the cost of policing which totalled 900 thousand dollars for the municipality last year.
Oswald hopes to get final policing numbers for the next council meeting on April 14th.
