The CEO of the Owen Sound Family Y is thrilled with the support from City Council.
Members unanimously backed a plan for a new 25 million dollar multi use recreation facility at Victoria Park.
The Family Y is spearheading the project and CEO Gayle Graham says it will help in their plan to secure funding and get support from neighbouring communities.
The proposed facility would include a larger indoor pool, a running track, fitness centre, gymnasium and at least one ice pad — maybe two.
It would also double the size of the current Family Y in Owen Sound.
Graham says they need more space because their programs are full and they can not serve all of the demand in the community.
Graham adds they would also be able to provide more programs for all ages in the new facility.
Graham feels this new facility will be a hub for the entire region — and serve residents across Grey Bruce.
She pictures a mother walking the track while her daughter is figure skating and the father is in the pool while their child takes swim lessons.
Graham adds Victoria Park is an ideal location because they need a lot of land and its close to major roads.
Staff from the Family Y and City Hall will now work together in finding programs from the federal and provincial government to apply for funding.
That will be the biggest hurdle since they will be looking about nine million dollars in infrastructure money.
Graham says they have travelled to other rec centres in Ontario and will take the best of each facility and incorporate it in Owen Sound.
