Before the week sails away on me, I want to congratulate the Grey Bruce Douglas Cleaners Highlanders Midget team on 2 fronts.
First of all, congratulations are in order for conducting a first rate SCTA Year End tournament last weekend in Owen Sound.
As the name suggests, Grey Bruce is a regional team with a variety of home bases.
For this type of tournament, the first time they’ve ever hosted such an affair as an organization, they chose Owen Sound with it’s two venues to be the host location and from every report it went terrific, and the hope is the SCTA will come back to the Highlanders & Owen Sound for future title tournaments.
And on the ice, Douglas Cleaners had a marvelous run.
After a 7th place regular season, Grey-Bruce went 4 & 0 in the Pool games and gained a spot in the Sunday afternoon semifinal against the Brampton Battalion at the J.D. McArthur Arena.
Spurred by a large contingent of fans, the Highlanders scored a 4-3 victory highlighted by a spectacular goal from Patrick Bell & a 2 goal day from Jake Weidner who sunk the game winner on a power play with just over 2 minutes remaining.
Awesome game, awesome tournament.
Next the Highlanders, along with the other semifinal winner, the Oakville Rangers, head to the OMHA Midget Championships at Peterborough this weekend.
I’m Fred Wallace
