It’s a vote of confidence in the safety of our food and the farmers who produce the food Canadians put on their table.
A recently released survey for the Ontario Farm Animal Council shows that Canadians are very emphatic to farmers and the economic challenges they face.
The Executive Director of the Council Crystal MacKay says their survey shows that Canadians trust the meat, milk and eggs they eat as being safe.
In addition she says they are interested in buying local to help their communities and the economy.
Mackay says the survey also showed that a vast majority of Canadians really don’t know that much about farming, with 95 per cent saying they knew little or nothing about farming.
She says the positive news is that more than 62 per cent wanted to know more.
The top three issues that were important to Canadians were the sustainability and profitability of farming, cost to the consumer and food safety.
Mackay says besides educating the public about what happens on the farm, the Council also is involved in getting more young people interested in agriculture as a career choice.
She says agriculture today has changed a lot and has developed into more of a science based profession than it was in the past.
