The Oakville rangers and the Grey Bruce Douglas Cleaners Highlanders have gained a berth at the O.M.H.A. Midget Hockey Championships.
At the SCTA Qualifying Tournament in Owen Sound this weekend, the Rangers & the Highlanders win the two semifinal games and now advance to the O.M.H.A. Midget Championship tournament at Peterborough.
Oakville, the # 1 team during the regular season defeated the Halton Hurricanes 5-1 to win their semifinal Sunday afternoon at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore.
Mark Bennett scored twice for Oakville in the win.
The second semifinal match was much closer as the Douglas Cleaner Highlanders shaded the Brampton Battalion 4-3.
Jake Weidner scored twice for the Highlanders, including the game winning goal on a power play with just over 2 minutes to play
Weidner relates he’s scored some big goals in his minor hockey days, but the game winner might have been the biggest.
Highlanders coach Jay Forslund believes playing at ” home ” in Owen Sound was a boost for the Grey Bruce entry.
During the regular season, Grey Bruce was 7th in the 10 team league.
Furthermore, he states the Highlanders organization did a first rate job in their first ever attempt at hosting an SCTA Year End Championship tournament that they should be considered again in the future.
The Oakville & the Highlanders begin play this coming weekend at the O.M.H.A. Championship tournament in Peterborough.
