It is not liquid gold, but Grey Bruce Maple Syrup producers will be enjoying higher prices for their product this Spring.
Because of two poor crop years in Quebec, demand for Ontario and Grey Bruce Maple Syrup is increasing and that in turn, is resulting in an increase in prices to producers.
Nick Bereznick is the President of the Grey Bruce Maple Syrup Association and says he expects producers will be getting a lot more than the 18 to 19 dollars a litre they received last year for their syrup.
Although he says he has not seen any pricing numbers just yet, some experts in the industry say prices will be up by 30 to 40 per cent over last years levels.
Bereznick says for established producers this is a very good time to be in the business and for new producers its a good time to be starting up.
He says while the cool temperatures has slowed the sap run a little bit, the quality of syrup being produced now is exceptional.
Bereznick also says the local food movement is proving to be a big boom for Grey Bruce Maple Syrup producers.
He says more and more people want to know where their food is coming from and they want to visit the sugar bush, and talk to the producer about his product.
Bereznick says this demand for local product also is helping drive up the price of syrup.
