A local water bottling company has big plans to create a one-of-a-kind recycling program.
Ice River Springs of Feversham is Canada’s second largest water bottling company.
Family owner Sandy Gott says it’ll be the first plant in North America to recycle plastic bottles for reuse as beverage containers.
She says they’ll have to bring in specialized equipment from Europe and are currently working on building relationships and signing contracts with municipalities, recycling companies and brokers.
Gott says bottled water has been targeted recently with several municipalities banning the product from their public facilities.
She calls it unfair saying there are plenty of other beverages, besides water that use plastic bottles.
The Ice River Springs facility has also reduced the actual amount of plastic in its bottles by almost 45 percent.
Gott says a recent survey showed that 96 percent of bottled water consumers recycle at home.
She says the difficulty is keeping those numbers up outside of home.
The company hopes to have the recycling program up and running by early next year.
