Kincardine residents can expect some changes when it comes to where their garbage goes.
The Ward One Landfill site, serving the former Town of Kincardine is nearly full and will be closed in the fall of 2010.
Council recently debated over whether to continue to operate a transfer site for waste at the location but decided not to go with that option.
The property will be turned into a passive recreation area, perhaps for an off-leash dog park.
Councillor Ron Hewitt is concerned the lack of transfer site will mean a reduction in services for town residents, who instead have to use the Ward 2 Landfill.
Councillor Guy Anderson suggested having a transfer site for yard waste only.
Mayor Larry Kraemer says he’d prefer to see a single landfill site that is open 6 days a week with full-time staff.
However, he says he’d be open to exploring the option of allowing recyclable materials to be collected at the Ward One site.
Kraemer doesn’t support the idea of collecting yard waste or household garbage at the site because it could make a mess and attract rodents to the proposed recreational area.
Kraemer believes the only issue residents will have to deal with because of the landfill changes is the fact they’ll have to drive a bit further.
The plans for the Ward One landfill site will still go before a public meeting at a later date.
