The slump in the world economy is hitting home for MacLean Engineering workers in Owen Sound.
21 workers were laid off last week, basically half of the workforce at the company.
A company official says they blame the layoffs on the current economy but remain optimistic things will turn around by the fall of this year.
MacLean Engineering produces heavy underground mining equipment as well as municipal vehicles mainly used for clearing sidewalks and other tasks in confined areas.
The company operates out of the former Parker Hannifin building on 6th street east.
Just last July, MacLean Engineering was in an expansion mode and had bought out a small Ottawa firm.
At the time, the company launched its’ new “Municipal Vehicle” to plenty of fan-fare and optimism.
