The cost of recycling in Bruce County is going up as predicted.
General Manager of the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling Association (BASWRA) Vince Cascone says as reported back in December, they continue to deal with a sharp decline in the value of metals and plastics.
Cascone says that has led to serious declining revenues for BASWRA – to the tune of a projected loss of 600 thousand dollars.
Cascone says they are dipping into reserves to assist with that loss – but adds some help to recoup the loss will come from increasing the cost of recycling per household.
Last year it was 17 dollars, and Cascone says they’re increasing it by seven dollars to 24.
Cascone says the BASWRA Board of Directors has approached each of the seven municipalities they represent with the increase.
He says they are dealing with somewhat better conditions than just a few months ago – but are still taking a hit.
Cascone says they are at the mercy of the commodity markets – if the market goes up, their prices go down, and vice versa.
