Council is considering changes that will make the by-law clearer.
Council was presented with the revised by-law at Monday’s meeting that would give a more clear definition of where and when all-terrain vehicles can be operated in the Municipality.
Some of the changes include a list of prohibited roads in urban areas, set fines for infractions, and setting a time between 9 P.M. to 5 A.M. the following day where ATVs cant be operated.
West Grey Police Chief Rene Berger says he wanted to address safety and noise concerns around hospitals, schools, and seniors homes.
He says this revised by-law would make it less cumbersome for the officers enforcing it.
Berger says the by-law will be complaint-driven in addition to officer observation.
He says it is tough to tell whether officers will face any difficulties until they deal with a complaint.
Councillor Bev Cutting is opposed to the revised by-law.
She says Councils decision to make changes to the by-law would effectively allow roads to be open for ATV use.
Cutting says a committee was formed last year to set the current by-law.
She says there was a happy medium that was arranged by the committee that would allow ATVs to go through trails and parts of the Municipality.
She says the revised by-law basically disregards the work done by the committee and the concerns addressed by those who oppose ATVs being operated in populated areas.
The revised by-law will be presented to Council for a vote on March 16th.
