Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The Owen Sound Attack host the Flint Firebirds tonight in an Ontario Hockey League game at the JD McArthur Arena.
Put quite simply, the winner of the game tonight will grab possession of first place in the OHL's Western Conference early in the season.
Currently, the Saginaw Spirit have possession of first place with 19 points whereas Flint sits 1 point back and Owen Sound is 2 points back.
Both the Firebirds and the Attack have played 12 games on the season, curiously, 4 less games than the Spirit.
For the sake of competition, you have to like the derby that currently exists in the Western Conference. From Saginaw at the top to Sarnia, winners of 5 of their last 6 games, at the bottom only 9 points separate the entire group.
As we approach the 1/5 mark of the season, it's still expected, at least here, that London and Saginaw will be prime contenders for the Conference crown.
All of which makes tonight that much more meaningful.
There's NOBODY out there who anticipated an Attack-Firebird showdown for 1st place at any point of the season, so even this early, it's a nice attraction.
Flint has been a doormat from Day 1 and to have them peaking at the top is good for them, and good for the league.
The Attack, they're a pleasant surprise as well in my book. On the season, Owen Sound's only loss on home ice was a shootout defeat in the home opener. After that they've reeled off 6 straight wins at home
I hope you can get to the game tonight. If not, Matt Hermiz will have the play by play right here on 560 CFOS.
