Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Will we have a Wild Card Champion in Major League Baseball ?
It could happen this weekend, maybe as early as tomorrow night, as the Washington Nationals come home with a 2-0 lead in the World Series over the Houston Astros.
The Astros won 107 games this year to lead the American League West.
Washington won 93 games and finished 2nd in the National League East.
Yet, after rallying to eliminate the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card, after stunning the L.A. Dodgers in the Division Series and after sweeping the St Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, the Nationals are 2 wins away from the title
And they've been full marks for it; coming back from an early deficit in Game 1 to win 5-4 and then exploding for 6 runs in the 7th inning to win Game 2 12-3. Impressive. maybe more impressive they did it in Houston
If Washington does sweep or take 2 out of 3 at Nationals Park this weekend, they won't be the first Wild Card team to capture the World Series; the Florida Marlins, in 1997 and again in 2003; the Anaheim Angels in 2002; the Boston Red Sox, in 2004; the St. Louis Cardinals, in 2011; and the San Francisco Giants, in 2014 all came from Wild Card Wilderness to be Major League Baseball's Champions.
Can Washington join them this weekend ?
Also this weekend, there's the Monster Madness at Victoria Park, the Attack are at home Saturday to North Bay, the Collingwood Colts have home games tonight and Sunday afternoon, plus there's PJHL and WOAA Senior Hockey action on many fronts.
Have a great weekend.
I'm Fred Wallace
