Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
It's not quite like waiting for Christmas, but still there's a sense of anticipation that builds from end of Winter to the day of the home opener for the Knights of Meaford.
That day is here as the Knights play their Greater Metro Junior Hockey League home opener tonight when they host the Ottawa Sharpshooters.
As always, the Knights started the season on the road with 4 straight road games in which they played .500; winning at Bancroft and at Ottawa, but losing to New Tecumseth and the Bradford Bulls.
It's notable that the New Tecumseth Civics and the Bradford Bulls are 1-2 in the North Division and combined have played 23 games on the season.
The Knights by comparison are playing just their 5th tonight and their first at the Meaford & St Vincent Community Centre which means there's games to be made up.
It also bears noting that even with the Home Opener on the horizon tonight, the Greater Metro schedule has the Knights playing 9 of their first 12 on the road.
If they withstand that sequence, it should give them an opportunity to be a contender in the North.
Currently, Meaford is 10th in the 11 team North Division and while the optics of that may look poor, the reality is they have at least 4 games in hand on some teams and as many as 9 compared to others.
Yes, the Knights have had plenty of practice time, but hockey people will tell you there's no substitute for a game and the home games begin tonight at 7:30 when the Knights of Meaford host the Ottawa Sharpshooters.
