Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
I've spent a couple of days at Cobble Beach, the most recent being the fabulous Concourse D'Elegance, a masterpiece showcase of the automobile surrounded by Cobble's spectacular scenery.
And as unique, exciting and dream provoking as the 7th annual Concourse D'Elegance was, truthfully, the more enjoyable day for me was an outing of golf arranged by Warren Thomas at Cobble Beach.
In mid-September, two guys I've known almost as long as anybody, Mike Abram & Craig Watson, showed up for a day of golf and a long-overdue catch-up session.
I've known Mike since Mrs Cowan's Kindergarten Class at Huron Park Public School in 1965.
He's just retired as a Principal in the Simcoe County Board of Education, most recently at Bear Creek in Barrie.
Craig arrived at Huron Park around Grade 2 and now works & resides in Collingwood.
So you can imagine we had lots of ground to cover from elementary school to high school and beyond.
Aside from the classroom, our other common denominator was sports.
At one point or another we all played in Midland Minor Baseball, plus we were long time teammates in Minor Hockey.
Mike & I were on the " Lions " as 6 year olds and continued as hockey teammates right through Junior C with the old Midland Centennials. After Jr C, Mike went on to play for the University of Toronto Blues.
Craig didn't take up hockey until he was 11, and then at age 12 decided he wanted to be a goalie, and because he's as natural an athlete as I've known, the transition was more than smooth. 14 years after going between the pipes as a Civitan Peewee, he was still tending goal for the Collingwood Shipbuilders in the old OHA Senior League.
In 1977, the Midland Legion Midgets won the International Silver Stick at Sarnia, the first Midland team to ever do so, and the only Midget team from the town to ever win it.
At that tournament, Mike, who was a defenceman & the Legion captain, was named to the All Star Team.
Craig, along with his netminding partner Paul Goodine, were also named to the International Silver Stick All Star Team.
As you can imagine, I was never under consideration for an All Star spot at that tournament...or anywhere.
And that was just one of the items Mike, Craig & I smiled about roaming the fairway, and hazards, at Cobble Beach
