Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Over the last week there's been a sequence of events that have been somewhat tied to sports, but more so have been significant community events.
Last Thursday, the kickoff to the annual Mount Forest Fireworks Festival was staged when the 2nd annual " Get Yer Hillbilly On " Ribfest was conducted at the Sports Complex,
A year ago, the organizers managed to sell 250 tickets and were so gratified by the community response.
This year the estimate was that 600 people turned out for the event.
Mount Forest Ribfest was inspired by former Owen Sound Sun Times sports writer Bill Walker who passed away in 2017 and the Ribfest tribute now serves as a terrific fundraiser for Minor Sports and Cancer patient care services in Mount Forest and area.
The following day, the 24th annual Port Elgin Rotary-Jeff Preston Golf Tournament was staged at Saugeen Golf Club in Port Elgin.
Once upon a time, this tournament was somewhat of a sports celebrity affair.
While there are still prominent names at the event; Les Binkley, Bryan Lewis, Ian MacKay, Kevin Czuczman among others, the primary goal for the tournament is to raise funds for research into muscular dystrophy.
This year the tournament generated in excess of $ 27,000, which brought the overall funds generated through the years by the Jeff Preston tournament to $ 1.5 million dollars.
Two different events in two different counties both generated significant dollars for significant causes.
