Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
As we head into Canada Day weekend, I found it more than coincidental that the final interview I conducted before the long weekend was with a national athlete.
Kate Haber, formerly Katie Sauks of Owen Sound, is a member of the Canadian Rowing team and has been selected to represent Canada at the Pan American Games in Peru this Summer.
Haber who resides and trains in Victoria, BC, will return in the lightweight double sculls event, a category that she won a Gold Medal in back in 2015 at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
When asked about her memories of winning gold at Toronto, Haber quickly responded that, ' it seems like yesterday '.
Thus, with a Pan Am Gold Medal to her credit, a competitive trip to the World Championships relatively recently at Bulgaria, AND with the Olympic Games on the fairly short term horizon, Haber relates that her level of focus and motivation is very high.
Haber will be looking to repeat her gold medal performance from the Toronto Pan American Games, albeit with a different partner, Jaclyn Stelmaszyk.
The new duo should be every bit as successful in Katie Haber's view as Stelmaszyk has competed on the World stage for Poland going back almost a decade.
Plus, Haber and Stelmaszyk also share a connection through motherhood as both gave birth to children in 2017 and have been dubbed " The Mommy Double ".
The lightweight double sculls will commence in early August at the Pan Am Games and as we approach Canada Day, we've made a note to keep tabs on a national athlete from Owen Sound, Katie Haber at the 2019 Pan Am Games.
