Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "
The Owen Sound Attack hit the road this weekend to launch what will extend to a stretch of 5 straight road games in the Ontario Hockey League.
At North Bay. At Sudbury. At Sault Ste Marie. At Flint. And finally, at Windsor.
The Attack hit the road on a 5 game losing streak.
Yes, there were contributing factors, ( sickness ) in the 2 weekend losses at home, but a 5 game skid is a 5 game skid.
The Attack hit the road after a 9-0 demolition in Owen Sound at the hands of Niagara.
That kind of defeat is hard to erase quickly from the memory banks.
And the Attack hit the road with just 7 wins away from home this season.
I've always maintained an average Owen Sound club will win 11 on the road in any given year, and it appears that theory is in jeopardy.
So, it's pretty bleak, right ?
But the beauty of Junior Hockey, hockey or sports in general, is the show must go on; today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year.
For the Attack, they're in an interesting spot......
Their stated goal all along has been to make the Western Conference Playoffs for a 9th straight season, and the post season is a distinct possibility for Owen Sound, even in a season in which they discarded BIG TIME at the half mile pole.
And running concurrent with their playoff goal, is a secondary, somewhat softer desire, to be bypassed by the Eastern Conference teams in the overall standings, thus allowing Owen Sound to move up draft positions towards possibly a Top 7 pick for the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.
To that end, tonight in North Bay, the Attack will be out to beat the Battalion & try to inch closer to a post season berth, no question.......but an outright loss by Owen Sound would push the Battalion to within 1 point of Owen Sound in the overall standings.
