Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Merry Christmas

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

This is our final segment before Christmas, so most of all I want to wish everyone a very happy holiday.

While Christmas is upon us, it's not a Silent Night from a sports standpoint.

There's NHL & NBA action plus the Toronto Rock are in Buffalo to face the Bandits in the NLL

My night this evening will be spent in Shallow Lake as the WOAA Senior Crushers host the Shelburne Muskies.

Game time is 8:30 in Shallow Lake.

Meanwhile at the Plex in Port Elgin tonight there's a Grey-Bruce Senior matchup as the Durham Thundercats face the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks.

And further afield Ripley is at Lucknow tonight.

There's 3 PJHL Pollock Division games tonight at Mount Forest, at Hanover and at Walkerton

Plus tonight, Team Canada plays their 2nd pre-tournament game in advance of the World Junior Hockey Championship when they face Slovakia.

The World Junior this year has a heightened Owen Sound presence with both Markus Phillips and Nick Suzuki of the Attack playing for Team Canada.

Through the years, Owen Sound has had players on Team Canada's Junior team; Jamie Storr twice, Adam Mair, Wayne Simmonds, Jordan Binnington, Chris Bigras & Jonah Gadjovich.

But there's NEVER been a case in which two players from the Owen Sound OHL squad have made the team, until this year when both Phillips & Suzuki were selected and that's a major accomplishment for those players and a testament to the quality of the Attack organization.

Jamie Storr won Gold twice at the World Junior, while Wayne Simmonds and Jonah Gadjovich also were on Gold Medal Canadian teams.

Next month, if Markus Phillips & Nick Suzuki can capture a Gold then this will be a Merry Christmas indeed.

I'm Fred Wallace
